Describe Andrew Johnson's relationship with the Radical Republicans. Andrew Johnson was a Southern Democrat that found himself at odds with the growing Radical Republicans in Congress. He caused further division when he vetoes the Wade-Davis Bill.
Describe Andrew Johnson's impeachment. Andrew Johnson was impeached on 11 charges, the most important being the violation of the Office of Tenure Act. He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote.
Office of Tenure Act The Radical Republicans in Congress passed the Office of Tenure Act that prohibited the President from dismissing a Senate-appointed official. Johnson violated this law when he dismissed Radical Republican and Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton.
What is sharecropping? The economic system in the south following the Civil War in which sharecropper farmers farmed small plots owned by planters and paid an annual rent for seed, tools, supplies, and use of the land. It created a viscious cycle of debt.
Who won the majority of popular votes in the 1876 election? Electoral votes? Samuel Tilden received the most popular votes, but Hayes received the most electoral votes. Both the Republican and Democrat parties were accused of corruption.
What is Tammany Hall? A Democratic political organization in New York City that was known for its political corruption under William "Boss" Tweed.
What were the provisions of the 14th Amendment? 1) Full citizenship for all , 2) Confederate leaders could not hold political office, 3) State's representation in government based on whole population (not 3/5), and 4) Neither federal nor state governments would pay Confederate debts.
Describe the Compromise of 1877? Southern Democrats agreed to give Hayes the electoral votes to become President and Republicans (Hayes) agreed to remove federal troops from the South. This ended the formal period of Reconstruction in 1877.
What is "Grantism"? A term used to describe political corruption.
What is the 10% Plan? Lincoln's proposal to reestablish civilian government in the South after the Civil War. It required 10% of voters to sign an oath of allegiance to the Union before the state would be readmitted to the Union.
Who are the Liberal Republicans? A section that split from the Republican party that was tired of the corruption in the Grant administration and against the Radical Republicans. They chose Horace Greeley as their candidate for the 1872 election.
What was the Wade-Davis Bill? A plan created by Radical Republicans for the reconstruction of the South. It required a majority of voters sign an oath of allegiance to the Union before it would be readmitted. It also denied all Confederate leaders the right to vote or hold office.
