Second Industrial Revolution A period of rapid growth in the U.S. manufacturing in the late 1800s: steel, chemicals, electricity.
Bessemer Process A way to manufacture steel quickly by blasting hot air through melted iron to quickly remove impurities
Monopoly Complete control of a product or business by one person or group
Sherman Anti-trust Act First federal action against monopolies, it was used by Theodore Roosevelt
Knights of Labor labor union that sought to organize all workers and focused on broad social reforms
American Federation of Labor 1886; founded by Samuel Gompers; sought better wages, hrs, working conditions; skilled laborers
Collective Bargaining All workers acting together negotiate (bargain) with management for better conditions and wages
Homestead Strike 1892 steelworker strike near Pittsburgh against the Carnegie Steel Company
Pullman Strike violent 1894 railway workers' strike which began outside of Chicago and spread nationwide. Ended when Grover Cleveland sent in to troops
Haymarket Affair a violent clash in 1886 between union supporters and Chicago police that divided and weakened the labor movement
Industrialization the process of developing machines for the production of goods
Urban city
Urbanization the growth of cities; a shift of people from the country to the city
rural country
suburban area outside of the city
Nativism favoring the interests of native-born people over foreign-born people
Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) Founded in 1905, this radical union, also known as the Wobblies aimed to unite the American working class into one union to promote labor's interests
Political Corruption using illegal actions to gain power or influence government policies
Child Labor using children to work in factories and businesses
Sweatshops A shop or factory where workers work long hours at low wages under unhealthy conditions
Tammany Hall most notorious political machine; NY city; Marcy Tweed also know as Boss Tweed became head in 1863
