| Civil Rights Act of 1964 | law ending segregation in public accommodations and banned racial discrimination in hiring |
| Jim Crow Laws | segregation laws passed by white Southern Legislatures |
| Montgomery Bus Boycott | successful boycott of the Montgomery, Alabama city bus system to protest discrimination against African Americans |
| NAACP | National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, civil rights organization to improve the status and rights of African Americans |
| poll tax | a fee charged for voting |
| Plessy v. Ferguson | Supreme Court decision establishing legal segregation in public facilities as long as they were "equal". |
| segregation | the separation of races, particularly in public facilities and education |
| Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee | (SCLC) a civil rights group that organized Freedom Riders throughout the South to protest segregation |
| Non-Violent Resistence | practice of achieving social change through protests, civil disobedience, or noncooperation while being nonviolent |
| Integration | the intermixing of races previously separated |
| Martin Luther King Jr. | American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968 |
| freedom riders | civil rights volunteers who challenged illegal segregation on buses and in bus terminals throughout the South in 1961 |
| Voting Rights Act | 1965 law that removed obstacles to voting like literacy tests and poll taxes |

| Red Power Movement | a social movement led by Native American youth to demand rights to make policies and programs for themselves while maintaining and controlling their own land and resources |
| Cesar Chavez | Cesar Chavez was an American labor leader, community organizer, and Latino American civil rights activist. He co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, later renamed the United Farm Workers union. |
