| Compromise of 1850 | California was admitted to the Union as the 16th free state. In exchange, Utah or New Mexico could decide for themselves whether to allow slavery. |
| Fugitive Slave Act | Required northerners to return slaves that were hiding in the north. |
| Kansas-Nebraska Act | 1854 bill that mandated “popular sovereignty”–allowing settlers of a territory to decide whether slavery would be allowed within a new state’s borders. |
| Harriet Beecher Stowe | Wrote the book, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” published in 1852. |
| Dred Scott | An enslaved man that was a part of a Supreme Court ruling that disallowed citizenry for slaves. |
| Abraham Lincoln | Became president in 1860 |
| Confederate States of America | SC, MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX withdrew from the union and called themselves CSA. |
