| Cash Crop | Crops grown in order to make money |
| Indentured Servants | Poor people who pledge 7 years of service to another person if the other person pays his/her debts |
| Separatists | Another name for the Pilgrims, they wanted to separate from the Church of England. They settled in Plymouth Colony. |
| Jamestown | The first English settlement in the new world. A settlement that made money off of growing tobacco. It was founded in 1607 in the Virginia colony. |
| John Smith | An important leader of Jamestown. He helped create a trading relationship between the men of Jamestown and the Native Americans. |
| Pocahontas | The daughter of a Powhatan chief. Married John Rolfe and created peace between Jamestown and the Powhatans. |
| John Rolfe | Setter of Jamestown. Married Pocahantas. Was the first to grow tobacco as a cash crop. |
| Plymouth | a settlement founded in Massachusetts by separatists looking for religious freedom. |
| Wampanogs | The Native American tribe from Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Helped the pilgrims in their first year. |
| Mayflower Compact | The first written laws for the Plymouth community. One of the first forms of self government in the New World. Stated that the people would choose their own leaders and make their own laws. |
| Middle Passage | The journey enslaved Africans took across the Atlantic ocean. |
| 1607 | The year Jamestown was founded |
| 1619 | The year the first enslaved Africans were brought to the English colonies |
| 1620 | The year Plymouth was settled. |
| Starving Time | A harsh winter in Jamestown where many people died due to a lack of food. |
| Gentlemen | Wealthy men from England that settled Jamestown. They did not expect to work. 50% of the original settlers of Jamestown were gentlemen. |
| Powahatans | The Native Americans of Virginia. |
| Joint Stock Company | A company owned my more than one owner. The London Company was a joint stock company. |
| Strangers | People who sailed on the Mayflower, but were not separatists. (They did not come to the new world for religious freedom). |
| Leyden, Holland | The separatists lived in Holland for 12 years in order to escape the Church of England. |
| William Bradford | The Second governor of Plymouth Colony. Much of our understanding of the major events in Plymouth comes from his journal. |
| Massasoit | The Sachem (chief) of the Wampanoag tribe. Made an alliance with the separatists. |
| Tisquanto | A Native American that lived with the pilgrims. He spoke English and taught them how to plant corn. |
| West Africa | Most enslaved Africans were taken from this part of Africa |
| Chattel | Treating someone like property |
| Dehumanization. | Treating someone like he or she is less than human. (Like a farm animal). |
| Triangle Trade | The trade route slave ships took across the Atlantic. The route had 3 stops and formed a triangle. |
