| Imperialism | A policy of extending a country's rule over foreign nations, economically, politically, and through military force. |
| Alfred T. Mahan | U.S. naval officer and historian. He wrote 2 books where he argued for the importance of sea power and commercial control of the sea. |
| William Seward | Former U.S. Secretary of state (1861-1869) who managed international affairs during the Civil War and negotiated the 1867 purchase of Alaska. |
| Sanford B. Dole | First president of the republic of Hawaii, and first governor of the Territory of Hawaii after it was annexed by the U.S. |
| Yellow Journalism | Journalism and associated newspapers that present little or no well-researched news, instead using eye-catching headlines. |
| U.S.S. Maine | United States Navy ship that sank in Havana Harbor in February 1898 |
| George Dewey | Admiral of the Navy. Only person in the U.S. to have attained the rank. Best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War |
| Rough Riders/San Juan Hill | Members of the cavalry unit in which T. Roosevelt fought during the Spanish-American War. San Juan Hill is a hill in eastern Cuba that was captured during this war |

| Foraker Act | (Organic Act of 1900) Civil Law that established a civilian government in Puerto Rico |
| Platt Amendment | Treaty between the U.S. and Cuba that attempted to protect Cuba's independence from foreign intervention. It allowed extensive U.S. involvement in Cuban international and domestic affairs. |
| Protectorate | State of country that's protected by a largar, stronger one. |
| Emilio Aguinaldo | Filipino revolutionary, politician, and military leader who is officially recognized as the first and youngest President of the Philippines. |
| John Hay | American statesman and official who helped prepare the Treaty of Paris |
| Open Door Notes | Term in foreign affairs used to refer to the U.S. policy that would allow for a system of trade in China open to all countries equally. |
| Boxer Rebellion | Anti-imperialist. anti-foreign, and anti-Christian uprising that took place in China between 1899 and 1901. |
| Panama Canal | Artificial 82km waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean |
| Roosevelt Corollary | It stated that the U.S. would intervene as a last resort to ensure that other nations in the W. Hemisphere fulfilled their obligations and did not violate the rights of the U.S. |
| Dollar Diplomacy | American foreign policy to further its aims in Latin America and East Asia through use of its economic power by guaranteeing loans made to foreign countries1 |
| Francisco "Pancho" Villa | Mexican revolutionary general who fought against the regimes of Porfirio Díaz and Victoriano Huerta. After 1914 he engaged in Civil War. Notorious in the U.S. for his attack on Columbus, New Mexico, in 1916 |
