cancellous bone Spongy, porous bone tissue.
cartilage Flexible connective tissue.
compact bone Hard, dense bone tissue.
condyle Knuckle-like process at the end of a bone, near the joint.
diaphysis Shaft of a long bone.
dislocation Displacement of a bone from its joint.
epiphysis End of a long bone.
fontanelle Soft spot between the skull bone of an infant.
foramen Opening in bones where blood vessels and nerves enter and leave.
fracture Sudden breaking of a bone.
haversian canals Minute spaces filled with blood vessels, found in compact bone.
intervertebral disk A fibrocartilage substance between the vertebrae.
joint The point at which two bones come together.
ligament Connective tissue binding bones to other bones.
olecranon Large process forming the elbow.
osteomyelitis Inflammation of the bone and bone marrow due to a pyogenic infection.
osteoporosis Thinning and weakening of bone due to loss of calcium.
periosteum Membrane surrounding bones.
rheumatoid arthritis A chronic disease in which joints become inflamed and painful.
sinus Cavity within a bone.
sprain Trauma to a joint, with pain, swelling, and injury to ligaments.
synovial cavity Space between bones at a synovial joint.
synovial fluid Viscous fluid at a synovial cavity.
tendon Connective tissue which binds muscles to bones.
