CWAR and RECON

TermDefinition
Robert E Lee West Point Graduate and Confederate general from Virginia who was initially meant to fight with the Union
General McClellan The main Union general before Grant. He was fired by Lincoln for failing to take Richmond, VA and later ran against him for president in 1864.
Ulysses S Grant Union general after the firing of General McClellan. Was known as "The Butcher" and was accused of being drunk during battle. Later became president.
Copperheads A political party that arose in 1860 that opposed the Civil War and wanted immediate peace. Also known as Peace Democrats.
Sherman's March to The Sea A march lead by General William Tecumseh Sherman through Georgia in which the Union Army burnt cities to the ground and purposefully targeted civilian infrastructure
Battle of Gettysburg A Union Victory known for having the largest amount of causalities of the entire war. It also described as the turning point of the war
Battle of Bull Run Also known as the Battle of Manassas. A Confed. victory where General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson ordered troops to stand their ground like a stone wall.
Antietam The battle took place in Maryland and ended Lee's attempt to invade the North. This battle lead to the Emancipation Proclamation.
Emancipation Proclamation Issued by Abraham Lincoln after the Battle of Antietam which stated that all slaves in the confederate states would be free. Led to southern outcry.
Gettysburg Address An address speech given by Lincoln dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Battle of Gettysburg
Fort Sumter A fort best known for being the location of the first shots of the Civil War.
Border States Border states (Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, Missouri, and West Virginia) were slave states that did not join the Confederacy.
Army of the West a formation of the Confed. army that was apart of the Mississippi Army and was founded by Earl Von Dorn.
Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected president for his first term. This election led to increased tension due to many slave states fearing what Lincoln would do in office.
Election of 1864 Abe Lincoln and George McClellan ran against one another. Lincoln won mostly due to McClellan running on the platform of negotiation with the south.
Secession The action of withdrawing from a federation or body. The Confederacy claimed that secession was a states right.
Crittenden Compromise An unsuccessful proposal to make slavery a constitutional right so that it would become unconstitutional to make slavery illegal.
