QuestionAnswer
Tariff A tax on imported goods.
States' Rights The idea that states, not the federal government, should make the final decisions about matters that affect them.
Sectionalism Loyalty to one part of the country.
Bar Graph A graph that compares amounts of things.
Line Graph A graph that shows change over time.
Circle Graph A graph that illustrates how a part compares with the whole.
Abolitionist Someone who joined the movement to abolish, or end, slavery.
Discrimination The unfair treatment of particular groups.
Underground Railroad A series of escape routes and hiding places to bring slaves out of the South.
Slave State A state that permitted slavery.
Free State A state that did not permit slavery.
Union Another name for the United States.
Popular Sovereignty The right of people to make political decisions for themselves.
Fugitive A person who is running away.
Secession When part of a country leaves or breaks off from the rest.
Confderacy The name chosen by the states that left the Union at the time of the Civil War.
Civil War A war between two groups or regions within a nation.
