Reconstruction

TermDefinition
Reconstruction time period immediately after the Civil War when the South rebuilt & southern states returned to the Union
13th Amendment ended slavery in the U.S. (1865)
Freedman's Bureau federal agency created in 1865 to provide aid to former slaves & poor whites
tenant farming farmers who owned farming equipment but worked on someone else's land in exchange for a share of the crops
Black Codes laws created by Southern legislatures during Reconstruction that took away the civil rights of freedmen
Military Reconstruction military took responsibility for bringing the South back into the Union & southern states had to ratify the 15th amendment
15th Amendment gave African American men the right to vote (1870)
sharcropping farmers who worked someone else's land in exchange for a share of the crops & use of their quipment
Congressional Reconstruction Congress took control of Reconstruction, divided the South into military districts & southern states had to ratify the 14th amendment
14th Amendment gave African Americans United States citizenship (1868)
