| Reconstruction | time period immediately after the Civil War when the South rebuilt & southern states returned to the Union |
| 13th Amendment | ended slavery in the U.S. (1865) |
| Freedman's Bureau | federal agency created in 1865 to provide aid to former slaves & poor whites |
| tenant farming | farmers who owned farming equipment but worked on someone else's land in exchange for a share of the crops |
| Black Codes | laws created by Southern legislatures during Reconstruction that took away the civil rights of freedmen |
| Military Reconstruction | military took responsibility for bringing the South back into the Union & southern states had to ratify the 15th amendment |
| 15th Amendment | gave African American men the right to vote (1870) |
| sharcropping | farmers who worked someone else's land in exchange for a share of the crops & use of their quipment |
| Congressional Reconstruction | Congress took control of Reconstruction, divided the South into military districts & southern states had to ratify the 14th amendment |
