| Freedman's Bureau | Created by Abraham Lincoln Helped former slaves and poor white people in the South Provided food, housing, medical aid, created schools, and offered legal help. |
| 13th Amendment | Ends (abolishes) slavery |
| 14th Amendment | Granted Citizenship to slaves Grants citizenship to anyone born in the US |
| 15th Amendment | Gave African American men the right to vote |
| Carpetbaggers | A person from the North who went to the South to try to profit from reconstruction Also can be a person running for office that has not local connections to the place they are running for office |
| Scalawags | a white Southerner who worked with the Northern Republicans during reconstruction to earn a profit Also someone who behaves badly |
| Impeachment | a charge of misconduct made against a holder of public office |
| Gilded Age | Period following the Reconstruction Age- American Economy grew at the fastest rate in history |
| Credit Mobilier | a joint stock company created to build the Union Pacific Railroad, it involved a scandal where high government officials were accused of accepting bribes |
| Ku Klux Klan | a White supremacist group that used violence and intimidation against black people |
| Lynching | a mob trying to kill someone, especially by hanging |
| Jim Crow laws | Laws that legalized segregation (separating black and white people) |
| Black (negro) codes | Laws that limited the civil rights of free slaves |
| Manifest Destiny | The belief that the expansion of the US was justified and inevitable |
| Republicans | After the Civil War the Republican Party included African-Americans, Northern White Protestants, businessman, professionals, factory workers, and farmers--they wanted civil rights for slaves |
| Robber Barons | a person who became rich by being ruthless, unscrupulous (lied, not trustworthy, sneaky) |
| Philanthropists | a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others , especially by donation of money to good causes |
| Indian Wars | conflicts between white settlers and the federal government-main cause was manifest destiny- white people wanted their land |
| Immigration | moving permanently to another country |
| Reconstruction Period | Time after the Civil War when states that were part of the confederacy were brought back into the United States. The South was divided into districts and elections were set up to make new governments. It also tried to solve the inequalities for slaves. |
