TermDefinition
BCE before common era. Any time before the birth of Jesus. The Old Testament of the Bible was taken place BCE.
CE common era. Any time after the birth of Jesus. The New Testament in the Bible is considered to take place CE.
BC before christ. Any time before the birth of Jesus. The Old Testament of the Bible was taken place BCE.
AD Anno Domini “the year of our lord” Any time after the birth of Jesus. The New Testament in the Bible is considered to take place CE.
Archeologist people who study the past by examining things people have left behind. (ex. Tools, coins, clothing) Archeologists studied the caves of Lascaux paintings because they are artifacts.
Paleoanthropologist study the earliest hominids. Paleoanthropologists study the earliest types of hominids like Homo erectus and how they acted.
Prehistory the time before we could write. People believe that the caves of Lascaux were made in prehistory because there were paintings and not words.
History the past few thousand years when we could write. When Christopher Columbus discovered America it was history because they were able to document it.
Artifacts things people have left behind like clothing, cave paintings, coins, tools, etc. Ancient Egyptian artifacts can be found in some of the pyramids in Egypt from ancient times.
Biped walking on 2 feet and can stand upright
Nomad a group of people who follow where they can live in good conditions and where they can hunt more food for their tribe.
Hominid a primate of a family. We are hominids along with our early primate ancestors.
Migrate when something travels to another part of the world, usually to obtain a better lifestyle for that particular time.
Australopithecus afarensis early hominid species.Originated in Africa. Australopithecus means southern ape. Afarensis found in Afar Triangle in Africa.
Homo habilis early hominid species. Lived between 1.4 and 2.4 million years ago. Lived in Africa. First Hominid to make stone tools, (start of old stone age.) They are Biped. Lived in small groups. Nickname handyman.
Homo erectus early hominid species. Lived from 1.89 million to 143,000 years ago. The first group that originated in Africa and then migrated to Asia and Europe. .
Homo neanderthalensis early hominid species. Lived from 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. Lived in Africa, southwest Asia, and Europe. Neanderthalensis refers to the Neander Valley in Germany.
Homo sapiens Name means wise man. Lives in Africa, Europe, Asia, South America, North America. They spread to the other continents using land bridges before modern technology.
Homo sapaiens v2 We are biped. Physically the same as you and me. Created the most advanced tools like the bow and arrow and spear thrower. Used fitted clothing and lived in permanent shelters. Created art and musical instruments.
Homo neanderthalensis v2 Biped and the strongest group of hominids. Lived in communities and cared for one another. Lived and hunted in organized groups. Made many specialized tools. Coexisted with modern man. Nickname is Neanderthals.
Homo erectus v2 Oldest biped discovered at the time. First group to use fire and shelter. Used more complicated tools. Coexisted with early modern man. Nickname is upright man
Australopithecus afarensis v2 They are Biped. They had basic communication skills like grunting. They used resources around them because they did not have the capability of making tools. Nickname is Lucy.
