These are the vocabulary words and definitions that you need to know for Test 3.

merchant a person who makes money by selling goods
civilization a society with a steady food supply and examples of GRAPES: religion, achievements (technology, writing, art), politics, economics and social structure
artisan a craftsperson who creates a product by hand
cuneiform writing that uses wedge-shaped characters
scribe a person trained to write and record documents
ziggurat an ancient temple tower with outside staircases and a shrine at the top
culture the beliefs and behaviors of a society or a group of people
pictograph a symbol that stands for an object
city-state a city that was like a small, independent country with its own government and laws
irrigation the process of supplying land with water
code of laws a collection of written laws and rules
empire a large territory of several groups of people, city-states, or countries ruled by a single leader or government
