When Captain Christopher Newport returned to England to get more supplies, what problems did the settlers face? the gentleman did not want to work and many did not have the skills. They needed more farmers
What year did the second colony start in Virginia? 1607
How did John Smith help the colony to survive? he made everyone work - if you didn't work, you didn't eat!
Once while trading with the Indians for food, John Smith was captured. Who saved his life? Pocahontas
Why was John Smith sent back to England? he badly burned his leg in a gunpowder explosion
Who allowed the Jamestown settlers to own their own land? Thomas Dale
What was the starving time? the winter of 1609, when people were dying from lack of food due to bad relations with the Indians who quit trading with them.
Who was Lord De La Warr? the governor who sent to the colony in 1610 by the Virginia Company
What product made the most profits for the Virginia Company? tobacco
The tobacco first grown in Virginia was bitter. How did it become so valuable? John Rolfe got seeds of tobacco grown in the Caribbean islands which was milder and sweeter
Who married Pocahontas? John Rolfe
Why did they move the settlement to Henrico? the original area was too swampy and full of diseases
What is a cash crop? a crop that is grown to sell for money
What is an indentured servant? someone who agrees to work for a farmer for a certain number of years - usually from four to seven. In exchange the farmer would pay for the servant's trip to Virginia and provide them with food, clothing, and housing. After that, they were free men.
What was the most important job for settlers in western Virginia? planting crops
What happened in 1619 that changed the lives and future of Virginians? woman came to the colony so men could have families, indentured servants helped with the work, and the population doubled expanding the colony
What kind of workers worked on tobacco plantations? blacksmiths, carpenters, shoemakers, millers, teachers.
Why did Alexander Spotswood want to settle western Virginia? He didn't want it to be claimed by France
What was the General Assembly? the new government that had two branches
What is a democracy? a government that is run by the people it governs
Who were the burgesses? Elected representatives of the people of Virginia. These men were elected by all free men in the colony.
Why did Opechancanough start a war against the colonists? because they were stealing Indian land
The English officials didn't see the need to start a college in a colony of tobacco plantations. Why was the College of William and Mary founded there? wealthy planters supported the school so they wouldn't have to send their sons to England for an education. At that time, only men received college educations
In 1698, where was the Virginia capital moved to? Williamsburg
What important experience did the Virginians gain from the House of Burgesses? how a democracy worked
Why did Nathaniel Bacon organize an army attack against the Indians? as the population grew in Virginia, the colonists started killing the Indians and taking their land. The angry Indians attacked so the colonists went against the governors orders and fought them. This attack later became known as Bacon's Rebellion.
