Colony A area in a land ruled by another country.
Mission A religious community where priests taught Christianity.
Convert To change a religion or belief.
Hacienda A large farm or ranch often with a village or church.
Revolt A violent uprising against a ruler.
Pedro Menendez de Aviles Started the settlement of St. Augustine in Florida.
Juan de Onate Led settlers, soldiers, and priests to present day New Mexico.
Bartolome de las Casas Wanted to protect all American Indians. He convinced the Spanish king to make laws to help protect them.
Pope (sounds like Popay) In 1680 led a revolt against the Spanish in New Mexico.
Junipero Serra Led an expedition up the coast of California.
Why is St. Augustine an important place in America history? It is the oldest city in the United States built by Europeans.
What year did Aviles find St Augustine? 1565.
Why did Spanish build haciendas? Because there was good soil for farming so many settlers built them. They often had a church and village because there weren't many towns yet.
What year did Onate arrive in New Mexico? 1598
presidio Forts that the Spanish built to protect Spanish claims and protect themselves
What was the main goal of the Spanish missions? To convert the Indians to Roman Catholicism
How did Indian's lives change when they went to live in the missions? They learned Spanish, converted to Catholicism, and used European farming methods.
Juana Ines de la Cruz A well known poet in Mexico City - the capital of New Spain
Who besides Spain tried to claim North America? English, French, Dutch and Russians
What was the Capital of New Spain? Santa Fe
How did Spanish Hacienda owners farm their land? They used Indian slaves.
