| Bicameral | Having two branches or chambers (of a legislative body). |
| Republic | A state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, usually a nominated president. |
| Ordinance | A piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority. |
| Depreciate | Diminish in value over a period of time. |
| Depression | A long and severe recession in an economy or market (not the horrible feeling). |
| Manumission | Release from slavery. |
| Proportional | Corresponding in size or amount to something else. |
| Compromise | An agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. |
| Federalism | The governmental principle or system of government. |
| Legislative Branch | Consists of Congress and the fifty state legislatures. They propose laws that needs and interests local constituents. It's made of popularly elected representatives. |
| Executive Branch | Consists the president, vice president, and Cabinet members. It reinforces and enforces laws and develops and signs treaties. |
| Judicial Branch | Appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Article III of the Constitution, which establishes the Judicial Branch, leaves Congress significant discretion to determine the shape and structure of the federal judiciary. |
| Check and Balances | Counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups. |
| Amendment | An article added to the US Constitution. // A minor change or addition designed to improve a text, piece of legislation, etc. |
| Electoral College | A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. |
