John F. Kennedy | 35th President. 1st to debate on TV and president during Vietnam and Civil Rights legislation supporter. Assassinated in Dallas, Tx in 1963 |
Lyndon B. Johnson | Becomes the 36th President after the assassination of JFK. Promoted and signed Civil Rights Act 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 |
Vietnam War | containment issue where North Vietnam invades South Vietnam pushing communism. The US aids Southern Vietnam but pull out of the war in 1973 |
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution | issued by Congress that gave the President authorization to conduct military operations in Southeast Asia without a formal declaration of war/ |
Vietcong | communist backed Vietnamese group that fought using guerrilla tactics. |

Medicare | federal government program that provides health care coverage (health insurance) if you are 65+ - part of the Great Society |
Medicaid | federal government program that provides health coverage for some low-income people, families and children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. |
Civil Rights Act of 1964 | outlawed major forms of discrimination against Blacks and women. The law ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and the racial segregation of schools, places of work, and facilities that served the general public. |
Voting Rights Act of 1965 | made it illegal for Black voters to be disenfranchised through unfair voter registration criteria. It ended the practice of using literacy tests as a qualification to vote and mandated federal oversight of elections in Southern States. |
SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) | student led organization that fought for civil rights |
Martin Luther King Jr. | Civil Rights leader that supported non-violent tactics to fight for Civil Rights. arrested many times. |
