John Brown’s Raid -Explain A Northern attack on a Southern institution, creates fear in the South of slave rebellion. Sometimes called a “dress rehearsal” for the war because this event happens before the war begins.
The Election of 1860 -Explain Puts the south over the edge and angry that Lincoln’s election means that the North and the Federal government will take away their rights and ban slavery. This is the final straw in the minds of the South.
Abolitionism and Uncle Tom’s Cabin- Explain A book published before the Civil War which creates a stronger resolve in the North to push for abolition, and angers people in the South. Exposes the dangers, cruelties, realities of slavery.
Lincoln’s Reinforcement of Union Forts - Seen as an act of war in the eyes of the South.
