writ of habeas corpus a legal order that requires an official who has arrested someone to bring that person to court and explain why he or she is being held
bill of attainder a law that punishes a person accused of a crime without a trial
ex post facto law a law that would allow a person to be punished for an action that was not

due process of law a guarantee that government may not take people’s lives, liberty, or property except according to the proper exercise of law
search warrant a judge’s authorization to search a place
double jeopardy putting a person on trial again for a crime of which he or she was already acquitted
grand jury a group of citizens that decides whether there is sufficient evidence to accuse someone of a crime
bail a sum of money an arrested person pays to a court to win release from jail while awaiting trial
plaintiff the party bringing a lawsuit
defendant the party being sued
injunction a court order commanding a person or group to stop a certain action
complaint a formal statement naming the plaintiff and the defendant and describing the nature of the lawsuit
summons a document telling parties of a suit against them and ordering them to appear in court on a given date and time
crime an act that breaks a federal or state criminal law and causes harm to people or society in general
arraignment a procedure in which a defendant is formally presented with the charges against him or her and is asked to enter a plea
testimony the answers that witnesses in a trial give under oath
cross-examine questions asked by the opposing side in a testimony
acquittal a vote of not guilty
hung jury a jury that cannot agree on a verdict
juvenile anyone under age 18
juvenile delinquents young people who commit crimes
rehabilitate to correct a person’s behavior
Internet a mass communication system of millions of networked computers and databases all over the world
World Wide Web a system that operates within the Internet, allowing users to interact with billions of documents stored on computers across the Net
