defendant | the party being sued |
injunction | a court order commanding a person or group to stop a certain action |
complaint | a formal statement naming the plaintiff and the defendant and describing the nature of the lawsuit |
summons | a document telling parties of a suit against them and ordering them to appear in court on a given date and time |
crime | an act that breaks a federal or state criminal law and causes harm to people or society in general |
arraignment | a procedure in which a defendant is formally presented with the charges against him or her and is asked to enter a plea |
testimony | the answers that witnesses in a trial give under oath |
cross-examine | questions asked by the opposing side in a testimony |
acquittal | a vote of not guilty |
hung jury | a jury that cannot agree on a verdict |
juvenile | anyone under age 18 |
juvenile delinquents | young people who commit crimes |
rehabilitate | to correct a person’s behavior |
