Age of Exploration vocabulary

TermDefinition
Merchant A person who buys and sells goods
Epidemic An outbreak of a quickly spreading disease
Circumnavigate To sail completely around the world
Conquistador A conqueror.
Empire A group of nations or peoples ruled by a single authority.
Expedition An organized group of people taking a journey for a purpose.
Patron Someone who gives financial support to a person or cause.
Navigatation The process sailors used to plan their courses and find their location from land
Slave trade The buying and selling of humans as property
Colony A settlement far from the country that rules that
Astrolabe A tool used to measure the height of stars above the horizon it shows how far from the equator
Magnetic compass A tool used to show the direction you are traveling
Technology The use of scientific knowledge and new ideas to create practical tools that improve life
Caravel Smaller and lighter ships with large cargo areas and triangular sails used for better control
Trading post Stores in small settlements where goods could be bought and sold
Columbian exchange The movement of cultures and goods between the Eastern and Western hemispheres
