| Chief of State | another title for the president, takes on the role of the symbolic figurehead of the united states; also know as the head of state |
| Diplomacy | the art of negotiatin with foreign governments |
| Chief Executive | another title for the president, who holds the executives power to run government programs and implement laws that are passed by congress |
| Commander in Chief | another title of president, who serves as commander of the nations military forces |
| Succession | the process of succeding, or coming after someone |
| Pardon | an official act by the president or by the governor forgiving a person convicted of crime and freeing that person from serving out his or her sentence |
| Amnesty | a general pardon for offenses committed by a group of offenders |
| Commute | to reduce a persons sentence |
| Chief of Staff | the official who manages the everyday operaations of the white house office |
| Bureaucracy | a type of organization, either in government or the private sector, having the following features: a clear formal structure, a division of labor, and a set of rules and procedures by which it operates |
| Civil Service | the group of nonmilitary government workers who carry out the work of the federal government |
| Bipartisan | made up of members from both major political parties |
| Progressive Tax | a tax whose rates increase as the amount that is subject to taxation increases |
| Regressive Tax | a tax that has a greater impact on lower-income earners than on upper-income earners |
| Dicretionary Spending | spending subject the anual budget process |
| Mandatory Spending | spending mandated by laws and not subject to the anual budget process |
| Fiscal Policy | a governments policy of taxation and spending |
| Monetary Policy | a governments policy of regulating the money in circulation and the interest rates at which money is borrowed |
