| black codes | laws made by the south before the clivil war to keep African Americas from having rights |
| Reconstruction Act of 1867 | gave African American men the right to vote. No former confederate leaders could hold office to vote. Made my US congress |
| Freedmen's Bureau | Formed to help freed slaves. It build hospitals and schools |
| carpetbagger | people who came from the north to start businesses in the south |
| scalawags | southerners who supported Reconstruction |
| 14th Amendment | gave African Americans citizenship and the right to equal protection under the law |
| 15th Amendment | gave ALL make citizens the right to vote (included African America) |
| impeachment | charges of wrong doing by an elected officials by congress |

| Jim crow laws | Laws passed after Reconstruction that enforced segregation |
