| Longitude | Distance east and west of the prime meridian |
| Latitude | Distance north and south of the equator |
| Altitude | Height above sea level |
| Hill | Area of raised land that is lower and more rounded |
| Mountain | High, steep, rugged land, usually at least 1,000 ft above the surrounding area |
| History | The account of what has happened in the lives of different people |
| Geography | The study of people, their environments, and their resources |
| Plain | Broad area of fairly level land |
| Map projection | Way of drawing a map on a flat surface |
| Globe | Sphere with a map printed on it |
| Cartographer | Person who makes maps |
| Isthmus | Narrow strip of land |
| Hemisphere | Half of the earth |
| Tributary | Stream or small river that flows into a bigger river |
| Irrigate | To bring water to an area |
| Prime meridian | Center of the earth cut top to bottom |
| Equator | Center of the earth cut side to side |
| Standard time zone | One of 24 divisions of the earth, each an hour a part |
