Klondike Gold Rush of 1896 | In the town of Klondike, Alaska, there was a gold rush that attracted many gold-miners despite the dangerous climate. |
Homestead Act of 1862 | President Abraham Lincoln signed this act before his assassination, which gave 160 acres of land to anyone who could create a living off of it within 5 years. Over 140,000 acres were given because of this act. |
Dawes Act | This act gave land to Native Americans, however it was not their tribal lands. Most Natives sold their land and become more dispersed. |
Indian Wars | The Indian Wars refers to era of western expansion, which often resulted in conflicts between the USA and indigenous people. |
Transcontinental Railroad | The First Transcontinental Railroad was a 1,912-mile continuous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 that connected the existing eastern U.S. rail network to the Pacific coast. |
Barbed wire | A type of fencing invented during the 19th century, used to keep cattle(cows) from wondering off onto other farms |
Custers Last Stand | USA military leader, George Custer, led troops into the Dakota region in order to chase off the Native Americans. The Native Americans fought back, leading to the deaths of several women, children, and Custer himself. |
