underground railroad network of abolitionists who helped runaway slaves reach freedom in the North or Canada
Uncle Tom's Cabin Book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that exposed the evils of slavery
federalism division of power between the states and national government
slavery condition where humans are owned by other humans
middle passage long, dangerous voyage enslaved people took from West Africa to the Americas
plantation large estate farmed by many workers
fugitive slave law law requiring northerners to return runaway slaves to their owners
John Brown’s Raid (1859) He organized a group of white men and free blacks to break into an arsenal and steal weapons to arm slaves to fight
Dred Scott Decision a slave who sued for freedom since he moved to free territory with his owner. The case went to Supreme Court and they ruled that since he was property- he had no rights and lost.
Bleeding Kansas Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) allowed these 2 territories to decide whether to be free or slave states. As a result, fighting broke out for the next few years- 56 lives lost in fighting
Missouri Compromise (1820) Said that all new states added to the north of line would be free states and all-new states added south of the line would be slave states
Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln elected president. Because of his anti-slavery beliefs, 7 southern states seceded (broke away) from the Union
