| Term | Definition |

| Arctic Circle | latitude line near the north pole |
| hemisphere | half of a sphere . There are 4 total-N,S,E,W |
| longitude | Long lines that are in the eastern and western hemisphere |
| latitude | Lines on a map that are in the northern and southern hemisphere. |
| compass | Gives directions-N,S,E,W as well as intermediate directions in between |
| physical map | Map that contains land water features |
| political map | Shows boundaries with color |
| Antarctic circle | a latitude line located near Antarctica |
| Equator | Latitude line located at zero degrees. Separates n and s hemisphere |
| Tropic of Cancer | Latitude line located at 23 1/2 n degrees -warm region |
| Tropic of Capricorn | Latitude line located at 23 1/2 s degrees -warm region |
| Prime Meridian | Longitude line located at zero degrees. Separates e and w hemisphere |
| International Date Line | located halfway around the world from the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) or about 180° east (or west) of Greenwich, London, UK, |
| Coordinate | Spot where latitude and longitude lines intersect |
| Absolute location | Exact, pinpoint coordinate that contains the latitude and longitude of a location. |
| Relative location | A location that contains North, South, East and West for directions. (estimate) |

| Mercator Projection | Square projection that is misleading at both the north and south poles. |
| Robinson Projection | Most reliable projection with curved longitude lines. |
