Compass Rose a circular direction marker on a map .
Cardinal Directions main directions ; north, south, east, west .
Intermediate Directions the " in between " directions ; NW, NE, SW,SE .
Map Key part of a map that explains what the symbols on the map stands for .
Map Scale part of a map that compares a distance on the map to a distance in the real world .
Map Title words on a map that tell the subject of a map .
Inset Map a smaller map set inside a larger map .
Physical Map primary purpose is to show landforms like mountains, deserts, and plains .
Political Map shows boundaries of countries and states ; locations of major cities and important bodies of water .
Historical Map a map that gives information about a place as if it was in the past .
Grid System an arrangement of lines that divides something into squares such as a map .
