Grade 6 Math Vocab

Math Vocabulary (definitions) For Grade 6 Students

TermDefinition
Equation a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =)
Equals Sign the symbol =.
Variable (of a quantity) able to assume different numerical values.
Solution answer to a problem
Dependent Variable a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another.
Independent Variable a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. (a variable that is alone)
Graph a diagram showing the relation between variable quantities, typically of two variables, each measured along one of a pair of axes at right angles.
Coordinate Point a pair of numbers that define its exact location on a two-dimensional plane. The coordinates of a given point represent how far along each axis the point is located.
