TermDefinition
Treaty of Kanagawa Under its terms, Japan opened two ports at which U.S. ships could take on supplies.
Meiji Restoration Mutsuhito took control of the government, and started to modernize Japan. Took ideas from the West.
Russo-Japanese War Japan drove Russian troops out of Korea and captured most of Russia’s Pacific fleet.
Manchuria A region in northeast China that was invaded and controlled by Japan.
Annexation of Korea Korea was under Japan's control. This is how they gained more power.
Westernization The influence of British and American technology. This is important because
Settler Colonialism People from other countries send groups of people to their country to settle there.
Japanese Diet Had 2 houses. The higher rank would approve bills and would "supervise" the lower house. This is important because it was the way that they would decide how to use their power.
Economic Colonialism feed the purported needs of the Industrial Revolution.
Opium War British pushed their way into Chinese ports and won the 1st opium war.
