A Study Stack required to be made by my teacher using Civil war and other terms.
| Term | Definition |

| Blockade | The act or means of sealing off (a) place(s) to prevent the transport of goods or people from entering or leaving. |
| Sectionalism | The restriction of interest to a narrow sphere; undue concern with local interests or petty distinctions at the expense of general well-being of a person. |
| Fugitive | A person who escaped from a place or is hiding from arrest or persecution. |
| Secede | Leave formally from a membership of a federal union, an alliance, or political/religious organization. |
| Abstain | formally refuse to vote either for or against a proposal and/or motion |
| Popular Sovereignty | Majority rule. |
| Border ruffians | Name applied to pro-slavery activists in Missouri, in 1854-1860, who crossed the border into Kansas territory to force the acceptance of slavery on them |
| Arsenal | A collection of weaponry, and military equipment stored by a person, country, or group. |
| Secession | To leave the Union |
| States Rights | The rights and powers held by individual states in the U.S. and not by the federal government. |
| Border State | Any of the slave states that bordered the free northern states during the Civil War. |
| Offensive | Actively Aggressive; attacking |
| Rebel | a person who rises up in opposition or armed resistance against an established government or ruler. |
| Yankee | A name applied to people living in the North at the time of the Civil War and before. |
| Blockade Runner | A ship that enters or leaves a blockaded port. |
| Ironclad | A 19th century warship covered in armored plating. |
| Casualty | a person injured in war or an accident. |
| Emancipate | set free, especially from legal, social, or political restrictions set. |
| Ratify | Sign or give formal consent, making it officially valid. |
| Habeas Corpus | Requires a person under arrest be brought before a judge or into a court, especially to secure the person's release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention. |
| Draft | A preliminary version of a piece of writing still being edited. |
| Bounty | A sum paid to encourage trade. |
| Greenback | A dollar bill. |
| Inflation | The general increase in prices and fall in purchasing value of money or currency. |
| Entrenched | Firmly established and difficult and/or unlikely to change. To place in a position of strength; establish firmly or solidly. |
| Total War | War that has no restriction in terms of weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded. |
