| Hoovervilles | shelters built by homeless people out of cardboard and tar paper, shacks with no running water, lights or heat, named after President Hoover |
| overproduction | producing too many goods |
| Dust Bowl | drought conditions in the Plains, dried the soil and the wind created dust storms |
| breadline | a place where people could get free food |
| surplus | an extra amount of something |
| insurance | a plan that protects against loss in return for a regular payment |
| crisis | an event that threatens people's well-being |
| liberal | one who favors change |
| collective bargaining | a way of negotiating between groups of workers and employees |
| overturn | to reverse |
| denounce | to reject or show disapproval |
