| Renaissance | A renewal or rebirth of interest in Greek and Roman arts |
| Secular | Related to worldly things |
| Urban | Having to do with a town or city |
| Mercenary | A soldier who fights for money rather than loyalty to a country |
| Diplomacy | The practice of conducting negotiations between countries |
| Humanism | Belief in the worth of the individual and that reason is a path to knowledge |
| Reformation | A religious movement that produced a new form of Christianity known as Protestantism |
| Indulgence | A pardon, or forgiveness, of a sin |
| Predestination | A religious belief that god has already decided who will go to heaven and who will not |
| Annul | To declare invalid |
| Seminary | A school for religious training |
| Heresy | A religious belief that contradicts what the church says is true |
