For purposes of local government. States are subdivided into___ Units called counties.
Which state constitution established eight counties? Constitution of 1777.
How many counties does GA have? 159.
Where is the county government headquartered? The most populated city; The county seat.
Who governs counties? Either an elected board of commissioners or a single elected commissioner.
What is the Sheriff responsible for? They are responsible for enforcing the law, maintaining the peace, and serving as the jailer for a county government.
What is the The Tax Commissioner responsible for? They are responsible for receiving tax returns, maintaining tax records, and paying taxes for a county government.
What does the The County Commissioner/Board of Commissioners do? They oversee the daily operations of a county’s government.
What does The Clerk of the Probate Court oversee? They oversee property deeds, marriage licenses, wills and supervises elections in a county government.
What does The Clerk of the Superior Court do? They are the primary record keeper for the county.
What was the original purpose of Georgia’s counties? They were used to determine what areas state legislature represented.
How are cities formed? A charter is granted by the GA General Assembly that states the boundaries and forms a government for the city.
Why is a special purpose government created? Special purpose governments are used to meet a specific need.
How does the state get money? The state gets money from Sales tax, Federal Grants, Property tax (MAIN), along with special taxes and fees.
What is the purpose of a budget? A budget details how much revenue should be available, how much the government plans to spend ,and on what.
