Backwoodsman Person who lives in forests or wild areas far away from towns
Plantation Large farm that produces crops to sell
Civil War Fought between Northern and Southern states from 1861 - 1865
Union Name for the Northern states during the American Civil War
Confederacy Name for the Southern States in the United States Civil War
Secede To pull out of or separate from
Reconstruction Period of time after the United States Civil War when the South was rebuilt
Civil Rights Rights of a citizen including the right to vote and protection under the law
Segregate To separate people according to their race
Gold Rush Sudden movement of people to an area where gold has been found
Public transportation system Trains and buses that carry people through a city
