Compromise of 1877 | Ended the era of Reconstruction |
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 | the first United States federal law to define US citizenship and affirmed that all citizens were equally protected by the law. It was mainly intended to protect the civil rights of African-Americans. |
Freedmen's Bureau | established in 1865 by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War |
Black Codes | laws passed by Southern states in 1865 and 1866, after the Civil War. These laws had the purpose of restricting African Americans' freedom |
Homestead Act | accelerated the settlement of the western territory by granting adult heads of families 160 acres of surveyed public land for a minimal filing fee and 5 years of continuous residence on that land |
Dawes Act | A federal law intended to turn Native Americans into farmers and landowners by providing cooperating families with 160 acres of reservation land for farming or 320 acres for grazing. |
Morrill Act | provided grants of land to states to finance the establishment of colleges specializing in “agriculture and the mechanic arts.” |
Andrew Johnson | President of the United States after Lincoln's assassination. Created a plan for reconstruction. |
Jim Crow Laws | a collection of state and local statutes that legalized racial segregation. |
