Key ItemDefinition
Iroquois Confederacy Formed in 1570 it was a powerful group of Native Americans. It included 5 tribes: Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida.
militia A group of citizens trained to fight in emergencies.
Ohio River Valley The rich, fertile land around the Ohio River. Present day western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinios, and parts of Kentucky. It was a great place to expand the fur trade. Wanted by both the French and British. Main cause of tension in the colonies.
George Washington 21 year-old sent to tell the French they needed to leave the Ohio River Valley. Created Fort Necessity. Will become and aid to General Braddock. Nation hero for striking the first blow against the French.
Fort Duquesne The French fort at the site where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet, present day Pittsburgh. One of the main forts to capture because it would control the flow of goods in and out of the Ohio River Valley.
Fort Necessity Built by George Washington as a small outpost away from Fort Duquesne. He was supposed to build it on the same site where the French built Duquesne.
Albany Plan of Union Created by Ben Franklin, called for "one general government" for the colonies. They would elect a legislature to collect taxes, raise troops and regulate trade. Came from wanting the colonies to be able to defend themselves from the French.
alliance Unions in times of war.
speculators Investors who bought land west of the Appalachian Mountains.
General Edward Braddock Commander in chief of the British forces in America. Wanted to drive the French out of the Ohio River Valley. Marched the troops to Duquesne. Was attacked by the French and Indians on the way. Killed during the attack.
Seven Year's War What the French and Indian war was called in Europe. Prussia fought France and its allies in Europe, while Britain fought France in the Caribbean, India, and North America.
William Pitt Elected prime Minister of England and oversaw the war efforts from England. 1. Great Britain will pay for the entire war. 2. Conquer French Canada. 3. Appoint good leaders: Jeffery Amherst and James Wolfe.
Jeffery Amherst One of the leaders of the War in effort in North America. Will lead the colonists to the long awaited victory at Fort Duquesne.
James Wolfe Another leader in the war effort in the colonies. Will lead the troops to victory on the Plains of Abraham and capture Quebec.
Quebec The capital of French Canada. If the British were to win the war, they would need to capture this city. Heavily guarded.
Plains of Abraham James Wolfe would lead his troops to victory on this plain outside the city walls of Quebec. Wolfe will die in the battle but so will the French commander.
Treaty of Paris of 1763 1. France allowed to keep some of its sugar producing islands in the Caribbean. 2.Give up Canada and most of its lands east of the Mississippi.3.Spain forced to give up FLorida for helping France. 4.Spain will recieve Louisiana Territory and New orleans
Pontiac's War Lead by Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe near present day Detroit. He thought that if enough Native Americans banded together the English colonists would give them more rights and more of their land back. They are going to lose this battle.
Proclamation of 1763 After Pontiac's War, England limited westward expansion at the Appalachian Mountains. Angered colonists because speculators already purchased land past this boundary.
