Cold War Vocab Set 8th Grade

Political Relating to the government or the public affairs of a country
Economic Relating to the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services associated with money.
Capitalism An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.
Communism Official ideology of the Soviet Union, characterized by the complete government ownership of land and property, single party control of the government, the lack of individual rights.
Soviet Union Name of the communist country of Russia during the Cold War.
Containment United States Foreign Policy to control and stop the spread of communism
United Nations International organization to keep peace
Cold War Hostility and conflict between the communist Soviet Union and the democratic United States.
Truman Doctrine US to provided financial aid to support the economies and militaries of Greece and Turkey
Marshall Plan Program which the U.S gave economic aid ($) to rebuild Western Europe after WWII.
McCarthyism Aggressive attacks of accusing U.S citizens of being communist and disloyal to the US that increased fear across the US. The accused tails were publicly aired on the radio and many were back-listed.
Arms Race The competition of stockpiling and creating nuclear weapons by the US and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles in Cuba. It resulted in the USSR removed missiles and U.S agreed not to invade Cuba
Korean War 1950 – 1953 A war between communist North Korea (with the support of the Soviet Union) and democratic South Korea (with the support of the United States). The war ended in stalemate North and South Korea remain divided
Vietnam War 1955- 1975 A war between communist North Vietnam and democratic South Vietnam (with the support of the United States). At the end of the war North and South Vietnam became reunified as a communist country.
Foreign Policy A government's strategy in dealing and interacting with other nations to benefit its own political and economic interests.
House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) An investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives that was created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty or communist supporters.
Brinkmanship The willingness to achieve an advantageous outcome by pushing dangerous events to the edge of active conflict. For example the threat of nuclear weapons or war.
