Why did Houston become the New York City of the South? | While Galveston was cleaning up from the storm, oil was discovered and Houston became the economic center of Texas. The Houston ship channel was dug out and made it the major port city of Texas. Galveston never fully recovered as the city it once was. |
What effect did the Spindletop discovery have on drilling in other areas of Texas? | Drilling and discoveries of oil took place all over the state from West Texas, the Panhandle, North Texas, and even East Texas. |
