| Tariff of 1828 | on imported goods to protect American industries, foreign products would be more expensive, more likely to buy the cheaper US goods |
| Spoils System | the practice of giving government jobs to loyal supporters |
| nominate | to choose someone to do something, such as run for office |
| Ordinance of Nullification | South Carolina, tariff laws did not apply to them, federal officials would not get duties from them, forced collection would lead to them withdrawing from the US |
| veto | the power given to the President to turn down a bill |
| issue | a topic of discussion or debate |
| Trail of Tears | 1838, movement of Indians east of Mississippi to west of Mississippi, many died during the difficult trip |
