QuestionAnswer
Upper South The place where most “southerners” lived: Along the Atlantic Coast in Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Deep South Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Arkansas, and Texas.
Geography How the land is shaped
Climate The weather of a particular area
Agrarian Economy The main way to make money is through agriculture.
Plantation A plantation is a large farm. Crops grown on plantations include cotton, rice, and tobacco. They had 20 or more slaves.
Cotton Kingdom The South was called this because cotton was very important.
Yeoman Farmers who did not have slaves. They made up the largest group of whites in the South.
Tenant Farmers Southern white farmers who rented (but did not own) land.
