| Plantation | A plantation is a large farm. Crops grown on plantations include cotton, rice, and tobacco. They had 20 or more slaves. |

| Yeoman | Farmers who did not have slaves. They made up the largest group of whites in the South. |
| Tenant Farmers | Southern white farmers who rented (but did not own) land. |
