| Emigrant | people who leave their own country |
| Tejano | a Texan of latin American (usually Mexican) descent |
| Decree | an official order |
| Barricade | to block off |
| Annex | to add territory; in this case to add territory to a country |
| Rancho | a ranch |
| Ranchero | someone who owns a ranch |
| Forty-niners | people who went to California in 1849 looking for gold |
| Boomtown | a fast growing community |
| Vigilante | a person who acts as police, judge, and jury without formal legal authority |
| Mission | a church established in a place where people are trying to convert others to a religion |
