Annex to add territory; in this case to add territory to a country
Rancho a ranch
Ranchero someone who owns a ranch
Forty-niners people who went to California in 1849 looking for gold
Boomtown a fast growing community
Vigilante a person who acts as police, judge, and jury without formal legal authority
Mission a church established in a place where people are trying to convert others to a religion
