Popular sovereignty All government power belongs to the people
Limited government Government can do only what the people say they can do
Separation of power Power is divided between the three branches of national government
Checks and balances Each branch of national government is able to check the power of the other branches
Federalism Power is divided between this national governments and state governments
Republicanism Citizens elect representatives to carry out the will of the people
Individual rights Individual rights are protected
Judicial Supreme and federal court, interprets laws
