| Natural resource | something in nature that can be used to produce something |
| port | a place on a waterway where ships load and unload |
| impressment | forcing somebody into government or military service |
| treaty | a formal agreement between nations or groups of people |
| embargo | a government plan to restrict ships from moving in or out of ports |
| Louisiana Purchase | territory in the Northwest United States purchased from France for $15 million |
| Industrial Revolution | a time when manufacturing changed from making things with hand tools to using machines |
| annex | to claim or add |
| free enterprise | economy that relies on market forces to distribute goods and resources and determine prices |
| capitalism | an economic and social system in which businesses are privately owned |
| share | part ownership in a company shown by a stock certificate |
| manufacturing | the act of making a product from raw materials |
| supply | total amount of goods or services available for purchase |
| demand | the amount of a particular good or service that consumers want to purchase at a given time |
| blockade | to isolate an area using ships |
