| Bicameral | Having two separate lawmaking chambers |
| Amendment | A change, correction, or improvement added to a document |
| Depreciate | To fall in value |
| Manumission | The freeing of individual enslaved persons |
| Ordinance | A law or regulation |
| Judicial Branch | The branch of government that includes the courts that settle disputes and questions of the law |
| Federalism | Sharing power between the federal and state governments |
| Constitutional Republic | A form of government, where the head of state and other representatives are elected from a group of people. It also means that there is a constitution. |
| Checks and Balances | A system by which each branch of government limits power of other branches |
| Depression | A period when economic activity slows and unemployment increases |
| Compromise | A settlement of a dispute by each side giving up some demands; a settlement of a disagreement reached by each side giving up some of what it wants in order to reach an agreement |
| Electoral College | A body of electors chosen by the voters in each state to elect the president and vice president of the U.S. |
| Executive Branch | Branch of government that executes, or carries out, the law; headed by the president |
| Proportional | Having the proper size in relation to other objects or items |
| Legislative Branch | Lawmaking branch of government |
