Missouri Compromise of 1820 Missouri was given to the slave states and then Maine joins the free states. They make a line at 36'30 parallel so that any states above the line are free and any bellow are slave states. Balance is still equal both sides have 12 states.
Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion The deadliest rebellion in Virginia in August 22,1831 led by Nat Turner. An enslaved minister took a group of people killing more than 50 whitemen, women, and children, and got 60 recruitees.
Compromise of 1850(North) California Joins free states. A new law is made saying that you can have slaves but can not trade them.
Compromise of 1850 (South) New Mexico and Utah territories open up to slavery. There is than a strong Fugitive slave law to please the slave owners.
Kansas-Nebraska act Decided by Stephen A. Douglass. He wanted tp please the South so he felt that any states organized in the Nebraska Territory could allow slavery. He also proposed splitting the territory into Kansas and Nebraska having Kansas a slave state n Nebraska Free
Violence in the Senate 1856 Preston Brookes beat Charles Sumner with a cane for singling his cousin Andrew Butler for forcing Kansas into the ranks of slave states.
Dred Scott Case 1857 When a Slave taken to free states for a few years than returned to his slave owner. He sued saying he was a free man. The Supreme court ruled saying he is property and does not have rights and can not sue in Federal Courts.
John Browns Raid on Harper Ferry A white abolitionist took a group of slaves to attack Harpers Ferry. The US Military stopped his raid killing all the slaves and John surrendered. He was trialed for treason and hanged.
Election of 1860 The Democratic party split making it easier for Lincoln to make his win as the new President. The south saw Lincoln as a threat since he was anti-slavery.
Sesseion The South split from the North making their own constitution becomeing the Confederacy. The North was the Union.
Jefferson Davis President of the Confederacy.
Ft. Sumter The first attack that started the war. The South attacked the Fort declaring war on the North.
Causes of the Civil War Disagreement over legality, morality, and politics of slavery. Kansas-Nebraska act sparked violence in Nebraska, Drett scott case, John browns raid, session, and attack on Fort Sumter.
13th Amendment Abolished slavery.
14th Amendment
