Jim Crow

Words and definitions for the Post Reconstruction period

TermDefinition
Jim Crow laws Required African Americans and whites to be separated in almost every public place where they might come in contact with each other.
N.A.A.C.P. (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People This interracial group's purpoe was to gain legal and economic equality for African Americans. Founded by W.E.B. Dubois and Ida Wells Barnett.
Booker T. Washington He believed African Americans should get an education and learn a trade. Equal rights would come later.
Plessy v. Ferguson In 1896 the Supreme Court upheld Jim Crow laws and segregation.
Segregation Separation of races
W.E.B. Dubois He did not believe in segregation. He urged African Americans to fight for civil rights.
Discrimination Unfair treatment of a group; unequal treatment often based on racial differences.
