| Booker T. Washington | He believed African Americans should get an education and learn a trade. Equal rights would come later. |
| Plessy v. Ferguson | In 1896 the Supreme Court upheld Jim Crow laws and segregation. |
| Segregation | Separation of races |
| W.E.B. Dubois | He did not believe in segregation. He urged African Americans to fight for civil rights. |
