WordDefinintion
Mesopotamia Is a small region of land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
City-State A city-state is an independent kingdom or state made up of a city and the surrounding lands it controls.
Euphrates and Tigris Rivers The great Tigris and Euphrates are rivers in southwestern Asia. They begin in the highlands of Turkey, within 50 miles of each other, and then run south into Syria and Iraq
Ur Ur was an ancient city in Iraq dating as far back as the 400s BCE.
Eridu Eridu was an ancient city in Sumer, a civilization in Mesopotamia, which is in current-day Iraq.
Uruk The legendary hero Gilgamesh is forever linked to the ancient Sumerian city Uruk.
Sumer Sumer was the site of one of the world’s oldest civilizations.
Baghdad Baghdad was founded in 762 CE on the banks of the Tigris river in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia.
Persian Gulf Between Iran (formerly called Persia) and Saudi Arabia lies a sliver of sea known as the Persian Gulf.
Trade Trade is the exchange of goods and services by sale or barter.
Plain A plain is an area of land that is mostly flat with gentle slopes.
Plateau Plateau is a geographic term used to describe a flat area of land that has a relatively high elevation.
Agriculture Agriculture, or farming, means "the cultivation or production of plants and animals for human use.
Silt Silt refers to small particles of sediment and soil that are easily carried in water, often in rivers.
Climate Climate is the general atmospheric conditions, or weather, of a particular location over a long period of time.
Irrigation Irrigation is the artificial application of water to land.
Goods Consumer goods are products meant to satisfy the wants and needs of buyers.
Tradition-Oriented Economy All economic systems must answer three basic questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?
Commerce Commerce means buying and selling goods and services, especially when many people are involved.
Euphrates River The Euphrates River, the longest river in Southwest Asia, runs about 1,700 miles from Turkey to the Persian Gulf.
Empire An empire is a large group of territories and people who are ruled by a single sovereign leader or nation.
