Phoenicians

| Where do the Phoenicians live? | They lived in Canaan, a narrow strip of land between Mesopotamia and Egypt. |

| How did they build their ships? | The area was mountainous with many cedar logs which the Phoenicians used to build ships. |
| Why are they so good at sailing? | The Phoenicians were excellent sailors - they used the sun and the stars to navigate-their ships had sails and they used oars when needed. |
| What did they trade most? | The Phoenicians traded cedar logs, glass trinkets, perfume and cloth. |
| Why were the ships wide? | The Phoenician ships were wide so that they could store these items below deck. |
| What else did they exchange? | They also exchanged ideas and the alphabet with other people. |
| How did they have peaceful trade? | Treaties with other people made sure the Phoenicians kept their independence and allowed peaceful trade. |
| What was the most important and powerful of the Phoenician cities? | Carthage was the most important and powerful of the Phoenician cities. |
| What did they do to the alphabet? | The Phoenicians borrowed the alphabet from the Egyptians and the Canaanites, and made it much simpler, using only 22 characters. |
