Phoenicians

QuestionAnswer
Where do the Phoenicians live? They lived in Canaan, a narrow strip of land between Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Why did they struggle to feed people? There was not enough fertile land to grow enough food to feed all the people.
How did they build their ships? The area was mountainous with many cedar logs which the Phoenicians used to build ships.
Why are they so good at sailing? The Phoenicians were excellent sailors - they used the sun and the stars to navigate-their ships had sails and they used oars when needed.
What did they trade most? The Phoenicians traded cedar logs, glass trinkets, perfume and cloth.
Why were the ships wide? The Phoenician ships were wide so that they could store these items below deck.
What else did they exchange? They also exchanged ideas and the alphabet with other people.
How did they have peaceful trade? Treaties with other people made sure the Phoenicians kept their independence and allowed peaceful trade.
What was the most important and powerful of the Phoenician cities? Carthage was the most important and powerful of the Phoenician cities.
What did they do to the alphabet? The Phoenicians borrowed the alphabet from the Egyptians and the Canaanites, and made it much simpler, using only 22 characters.
What did the Phoenicians do? They were herders (Canaanites) and traders/sailors (Philistines).
