black codes | laws made by the south before the Civil War to keep African Americans from having rights |

Freedmen's bureau | Formed to help freed slaves. It builds hospitals and schools. |
carpetbagger | people who came from the north to start businesses in the south |
scalwags | Southerners who supported reconstruction |
14th amendment | gave African Americans citizenship and the right to equal protection under the law |
15th amendment | gave all African Americans and all males the right to vote |
impeachment | charges of wrongdoing by an elected officials by congress |
segragation | separation between races |
Jim crow laws | laws passed after reconstruction that enforced segregation |
sharecropping | renting land from landowners and paying rent with a portion of the crop |
grandfathers clause | exceptions put in laws to help make change easier |
involuntary servitude | having to serve not by one's choice, slavery |
deprive | to remove or take away |
special privileges | immunities, being allowed to do something others are not |
area of control | jurisdiction, where one has influenced |
abridge | to take away, shorten |
insurrection | rebellion against your own country |
due process | all the steps taken to preserve the rights of citizens |
naturalization | to give the rights of being a citizen to someone not born in the U.S. |
obligation | a promise, contract, or sense of duty |
