The Constitution

| Federalism | In this government system, power is divided between national and state governments. |
| Legislative Branch | The branch of the government that makes the laws. aka Congress. |
| Senate | The upper house of Congress. Every state sends two representatives (Senators) to the Senate. |

| civil liberties | Basic freedoms that people have like the freedom of speech and religion. |

| Limited Government | The Constitution limits the actions of government by specifically listing powers it does and does not have. |
| Republicanism | People elect their political representatives. |
| Popular Sovereignty | People are the source of the government’s power. |
| Judicial Review | the power of the Supreme Court to decide whether laws and acts made by the legislative and executive branches are unconstitutional |
| interstate commerce | trade and other business dealings between two or more states |
| majority rule | a basic principle of democracy that says laws are passed by majority vote and elections are decided by a majority of the voters |
| interest group | an organization that actively promotes the view of some part of the public on specific issues in order to influence government policy |
